Master’s Degree in Management and Italian Food Culture

Interuniversity Master’s Degree Programme
University of Perugia – Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences (DSA3)
University for Foreigners of Perugia – Department of Italian Language, Literature and Arts in the World (LiLAIM)

This inter-university Master’s degree programme, jointly promoted by the Università per Stranieri di Perugia and the Università degli Studi di Perugia, in Management and Italian Food Culture, aims to train professionals and managers in the development of sustainable food and wine tourism, the export of Italian agri-food products, and the management of territorial and cultural resources connected to food.

To achieve this goal, the study programme offers a balanced combination of technical subjects (including courses in business, economics, law, and mathematical-statistical disciplines) and humanities (featuring modules dedicated to developing communication skills in specialist market and finance terminology, as well as building intercultural competencies within the complex relationship between food and society).

The programme also includes internships, placements, and educational visits to institutions, companies, and organisations operating along the agri-food value chain, which are closely linked to the cultural and environmental resources of their territories (such as import-export of typical agri-food products; organisation of cultural and food and wine events; tourism development; design and implementation of eco-sustainable tourism packages; digital marketing; development and management of green infrastructure, etc.).

The degree programme is structured into two tracks to better meet the needs of the job market.

  • The first track (Food and Wine Tourism and Cultural Heritage) prepares graduates for professional roles in the organisation and coordination of cultural tourism, with a focus on food and wine and a strong emphasis on the Made in Italy sectors.
  • The second track (Agri-Food Markets) focuses on the organisational and management aspects of the agri-food import-export sector, with particular attention to the promotion and international reach of local products.

Course Information

The educational and cultural programme, which is part of the European and Italian strategies for the economic and cultural development of Italian agri-food products, offers a curriculum that will enable graduates to:

  • acquire specialized knowledge to analyse, design, and utilize information systems and governance decision-making processes for agri-food production, with particular reference to Made in Italy products;
  • develop an advanced cultural and professional background and qualification, based on knowledge in economics, business administration, and social sciences;
  • receive training that enables them to analyse, manage, and design decision-making processes in companies, institutions, or organizations operating in the sectors of agri-food production, sustainable food and wine tourism, and cultural offerings related to food production and consumption;
  • be able to use fluently, both written and spoken, at least one European Union language other than Italian, including sector-specific terminology.

Career Opportunities The program aims to train professionals equipped with essential skills for roles in the development of agri-food organizations and production systems, the national and international marketing of foods, the cultural, tourism, and gastronomic promotion of Italian food and its associated heritage, and the design of activities and events for the growth of the Italian agri-food economy, particularly in an international context.

The academic and professional profile integrates the economic and cultural dimensions of agri-food systems with the ecological transition these systems are required to undertake. This integration enables the development of professionals whose expertise is well-suited to advancing the transformation of production systems, consumption practices, and commercial relations towards innovative and sustainable models.

The graduate profile that the program intends to develop is that of the Agri-food Manager—a professional figure currently lacking but highly needed, as highlighted by consulted stakeholders, and therefore offering strong employment prospects. This professional will possess advanced skills for working in international contexts—supporting the development of the market for typical agri-food products—and for fostering collaborations with professionals in the agricultural and agri-industrial sectors.

A key strength of the degree program lies in the network of relationships built around the two Universities, which enables strong collaborative synergies to support the Made in Italy brand at both the production and commercial levels, nationally and internationally, with the backing of major Italian institutional players operating globally.

Graduates holding a three-year degree from one of the following degree classes, or with another qualification obtained abroad and recognized as suitable, may apply for admission to the Master's Degree in Management and Italian Food Culture (MaCI):
