This programme, part of the Department of Italian Language, Literature and Arts in the World, is highly innovative: it is the only one in Italy to combine the curriculum and learning objectives of two degree classes—Tourism Sciences and Sciences, Cultures and Policies of Gastronomy.
By adopting an interclass structure, the programme aims to provide cultural training on the Made in Italy concept as a whole, as well as practical and technical skills to enable graduates to work within Made in Italy enterprises and in the food, gastronomy, and hospitality sectors.
Course information
- because tourism, gastronomy, and hospitality are driving sectors of the Italian economy, and there is an increasing demand for greater training and professionalization in these fields
- because Italy is renowned worldwide for its traditional products, cuisine, landscapes, and network of hospitality facilities
- because the program provides the cultural background necessary to promote Made in Italy globally
- because the course was developed in partnership with Confcommercio and Coldiretti, which ensures strong ties with the job market and companies in the sector, guaranteeing quality internships and placements, and greater employment opportunities after graduation
- because the program includes a wide range of activities (seminars, educational trips, workshops) that build a bridge between theoretical knowledge and the world of food and tourism
- because the training acquired during the program enables MICO graduates to either enter the workforce or pursue further education by attending master's programs or second-cycle degrees, allowing for specialization in various areas related to tourism and food—such as economics, law, communication, humanities, neuromarketing, health, etc.—according to their interests and preferences
Except in cases of exemption, international students requiring a visa must demonstrate proficiency in the Italian language at B2 level of the CEFR.
The programme is designed to provide students with the following knowledge and skills:
- acquire a sound knowledge of the culture and history of Made in Italy
- develop a solid understanding of fundamental disciplines in economics, geography, and psychology as applied to tourism, food, and hospitality
- gain essential theoretical, methodological, and technical knowledge for analysing food, food and wine, and hospitality production systems
- acquire appropriate knowledge and skills in marketing and communication, focusing on analytical ability and the management of operational tools within the dissemination and promotion processes and systems for food products, sectors, and cultures, as well as tourism
- develop the necessary tools for conducting market analysis in the fields of tourism and Made in Italy product sectors
- acquire foundational knowledge for managing businesses within the Made in Italy sectors
- gain comprehensive and varied knowledge of agri-food production systems and the science of gastronomy
- develop skills relating to certified food production
Graduates of this programme will be able to work in the import-export sector for Made in Italy products. They may also find employment in companies operating in the tourism, agri-food, and hospitality sectors, handling areas such as management, marketing, promotion, and communication.
