Bachelor’s Degree in Made in Italy, Food and Hospitality (MICO)

course overview

This programme, offered by the Department of Italian Language, Literature and Arts in the World, is highly innovative: it is the only one in Italy to combine the educational pathways and objectives of two degree classes—Tourism Sciences and the Sciences, Cultures, and Policies of Gastronomy.

Through its interdisciplinary approach, the programme aims to provide a broad cultural education relating to the Made in Italy brand as a whole, alongside practical and technical training that enables students to work within Made in Italy businesses and in the fields of food, gastronomy, and hospitality.

Course Information

  • because tourism, gastronomy, and hospitality are driving sectors of the Italian economy and there is a growing demand for enhanced training and professional qualifications in these fields
  • because Italy is renowned worldwide for its distinctive products, cuisine, landscapes, and its hospitality network
  • because the course provides a cultural foundation to promote Made in Italy around the world
  • because the program was developed in partnership with Confcommercio and Coldiretti, and therefore in direct collaboration with the employment sector and leading enterprises, ensuring high-quality internships and work placements, as well as improved employment opportunities upon graduation
  • because throughout the course, numerous activities (seminars, field trips, workshops) are organized to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical experience in the food and tourism sectors
  • because, thanks to the skills acquired, MICO graduates will be able to enter the workforce or continue their studies through master's programs or second-cycle degrees, specializing in various fields related to tourism and food in line with their interests and aptitudes (economics, law, communication, humanities, neuromarketing, health, etc.)

The course is designed to provide the following knowledge and skills:

  • an appropriate knowledge of the culture and history of Made in Italy
  • a solid understanding of the fundamental economic, geographic, and psychological disciplines as they apply to tourism, food, and hospitality
  • basic theoretical, methodological, and technical knowledge for the analysis of food production systems, food and wine culture, and hospitality
  • adequate knowledge and competencies in marketing and communication, aimed at developing analytical skills and the ability to manage operational tools for communication and promotion processes related to food, tourism, and cultural sectors
  • the necessary tools to conduct market analysis in the fields of tourism and Made in Italy productions
  • basic knowledge for the management of Made in Italy enterprises
  • a broad and diverse understanding of agro-food production systems and gastronomic sciences
  • skills related to certified food production

Graduates will be able to work in the import-export sector for Made in Italy products. They will also be able to work in companies in the tourism, agri-food, and hospitality industries, handling management, marketing, promotion, and communication.

Main career opportunities:

  • specialist in the export of Italian-made goods and services
  • public relations, marketing, and sales manager for companies in tourism, food, and hospitality sectors
  • content creator specializing in Made in Italy, food and wine, and cultural promotion
  • officer in public or private offices dedicated to promoting Italy and the Made in Italy brand
