Department of Italian Language, Literature and Arts Worldwide

In line with the longstanding tradition of the University for Foreigners of Perugia as an ambassador of Italian language and culture worldwide, the Department of Italian Language, Literature and Arts Around the World, established on 1 January 2022, has as its primary mission the study, promotion and dissemination of the rich Italian cultural heritage – encompassing the national language and its varieties, literature, the arts, music, theatre, cinema and audiovisual media – in close collaboration with the region as well as national and international institutions sharing similar objectives.

The Department fosters internationalisation and communication processes, aiming to create intercultural dialogue and promote the Italian language and culture; it encourages national and international partnerships and synergies to drive innovation in teaching and research.

The humanities subjects are continually explored with a focus on Heritage (art, cinema, literature) and Made in Italy, offering both wide-ranging and diachronic perspectives on Italian culture. This is further enhanced by the study of European and non-European languages and literatures.

The Italian language and culture courses – the founding core of the University for Foreigners of Perugia, inaugurated in 1921 – offer a broad educational programme for international students, those enrolled in Degree Programmes at Italian and foreign universities, and all enthusiasts of Italian language and culture, making use of advanced teaching and learning methods.

Home to significant international research projects, the Department serves as a hub, developing multiple connections with places worldwide where the appreciation of Italy’s invaluable cultural heritage is promoted.
