The PhD represents the third cycle of education in the Italian academic system, providing advanced skills for conducting high-level research at universities, public bodies or private organizations. It also serves as a pathway for access to careers in public administration and as a means for integrating highly innovative professional trajectories (D.M. 226/2021).
Doctoral training:
- fosters the advancement of knowledge through training in both basic and applied research
- promotes opportunities for interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary education
- contributes to the strengthening of transnational and international research collaboration
- includes the development of transferable skills, facilitating their application and enhancement in both scientific and professional contexts
Supplementary admission calls for the following PhD programmes are open until 15 October:
Master’s degree/specialist degree or another academic qualification obtained abroad, recognized as suitable.
For certain doctoral programs, additional admission requirements may be stipulated, as specified in the call for applications.
Admission to PhD programmes is subject to passing a specific competitive selection.
There are no restrictions based on age or nationality: candidates holding a Laurea Magistrale/Specialistica (Master’s degree), a university degree obtained under the previous regulations (prior to Ministerial Decree 509/1999), or an equivalent foreign qualification are eligible to apply.
The admission call for applications is issued annually by Rector’s decree and published on this website, on the European EURAXESS portal, and on the Ministry’s website.
The selection process is based on qualifications and examinations. The examinations consist of a written test and an interview. Candidates must also demonstrate proficiency in one or more foreign languages. Each PhD programme offers a specified number of positions with scholarships and others without scholarships.
The academic programme concludes with the preparation of a doctoral thesis conducted using scientific methodology. Upon passing the final examination, which consists of the thesis defense, candidates are awarded the title of Dottore di Ricerca ("Dott. Ric." or "Ph.D."). Upon request, the University issues the standard Diploma Supplement for all doctoral programmes.

PhD Programme in Linguistic, Philological and Literary-Artistic Studies
The PhD program provides training in the areas of historical, theoretical, descriptive, and applied linguistics, as well as language teaching (glottodidactics) and Italian linguistics, also with regard to the use of digital technologies. Other key fields include the study of the Italian linguistic, textual, and literary tradition from its origins to the present day, and philological research, conducted through investigations into paraphernalia, documentary, and editorial forms. These educational pathways are part of a broader project aimed at enhancing the value of the Italian language worldwide, integrated with the study of its artistic and audiovisual expressions from the Middle Ages to the present day.

PhD in Frontier Sciences in Sustainability, Diplomacy and International Cooperation
The PhD program offers a transdisciplinary educational and research pathway focused on strategic issues for contemporary society: the areas of specialization encompass research topics spanning the three dimensions of sustainability (economic, social, and environmental), aligned with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, with particular attention to diplomacy, international cooperation, and conditions of vulnerability.
