Third Mission and Social Impact

In addition to its two core missions—teaching and research—the Italian university system pursues a third: placing knowledge at the service of social, cultural, and economic development in its region. This is known as the Third Mission, which seeks to generate real impact on society.

The Università per Stranieri di Perugia is a specialized institution born from a cultural project deeply rooted in the region of Umbria, yet with a strong international vocation: to promote the teaching of the Italian language, culture, and civilization in all their forms.

Today, the Stranieri continues to nurture this “virtuous dualism,” viewing the Third Mission as a bridge between Umbria and the world. On the one hand, it enhances Perugia and its surrounding area through internationalization; on the other, it brings local identity and excellence beyond borders, sharing them with a global audience.

This vision of the Third Mission goes beyond the straightforward application of teaching and research outcomes: it also gathers and conveys the values that have defined the University’s identity for over a century. From the founding principles of peace and cooperation, to current themes such as sustainability and inclusion, the Università per Stranieri continues to serve as a cultural reference point, both locally and internationally.

Public engagement encompasses all the activities through which the University reaches out to society, engaging citizens, schools, associations, businesses, institutions, and the local community. It means engaging in dialogue and collaboration with the public, not only to share knowledge but also to listen, interact, address societal needs, and work together to find solutions. At the Università per Stranieri di Perugia, public engagement has anticipated the evolution of the third mission by several decades; for approximately forty years, the University has offered a wide range of cultural and scientific events open to the public, as well as social initiatives, often developed in partnership with local and national organizations.

As part of its public engagement activities, the Università per Stranieri di Perugia also focuses on citizens in the "third age," organizing events on issues relevant to older adults with a view to lifelong learning and skills development.

Continuing education encompasses the range of learning opportunities offered by the University for Foreigners of Perugia to those who have completed their "traditional" studies but wish to keep learning, updating their knowledge, or specializing further. It is aimed at adults—both employed and unemployed—as well as anyone interested in enhancing or certifying their skills throughout their life.

The University for Foreigners of Perugia actively collaborates with companies, institutions, public bodies, and associations to promote research, innovation, and shared growth. These partnerships make it possible to address real-world challenges, develop concrete solutions, and create new opportunities for students, researchers, and businesses. Through joint projects, internships, scientific consulting, and training activities, the university serves as a dynamic and open reference point, placing knowledge at the service of the region and society.

The University for Foreigners of Perugia is actively committed to social responsibility, promoting values of inclusion, sustainability, equity, and active citizenship. Through projects, initiatives, and collaborations, the University contributes to the social, cultural, and environmental well-being of its students, staff, and the local community.

The University for Foreigners of Perugia is committed to enhancing its artistic and cultural heritage, considered a living resource to be shared with the community. The university promotes awareness and enjoyment of its historical, architectural, artistic, and archival assets, strengthening ties with the local area and helping to convey the value of culture as a common good and a tool for collective growth.
