Upon completion of the training programme, participants will have acquired advanced knowledge and skills in the teaching of Italian as a non-native language, with particular focus on teaching Italian as L2/FL in migrant, educational, academic and professional settings. Specifically, they will be able to:
- analyse the linguistic, educational and sociocultural needs of diverse learners and design Italian L2/FL programmes consistent with teaching contexts and learning objectives
- plan courses, syllabi, learning units and teaching activities, selecting methodologies, techniques and tools appropriate to learner profiles and the course aims
- select, adapt and produce teaching materials and resources for Italian language instruction, including in digital and blended learning environments, according to students’ language proficiency levels and specific needs
- reflect on the Italian language across its different levels of analysis—phonetic-phonological, grammatical, lexical, textual, pragmatic and sociolinguistic—for educational delivery purposes
- design teaching interventions aimed at developing Italian language competences, with particular attention to Italian for academic purposes, Italian for the workplace and Italian for general and specific purposes
- make informed use of tools and technologies for both in-person and online teaching
- develop, analyse and evaluate assessment tasks and tools for language competence, in line with learning objectives and the main theoretical and methodological frameworks in the field
- recognise the intercultural dimension of language teaching, operating with sensitivity to cultural differences, sociopragmatic norms, potential communication barriers and the need to overcome stereotypes
- observe, manage and evaluate teaching and learning processes with critical awareness, fostering reflective practice regarding both personal and others’ teaching methods
- work autonomously in classroom management and collaborate in the design and organisation of learning pathways in complex contexts
The Master's programme provides advanced knowledge and highly specialised skills in the field of teaching Italian as a non-native language (L2/LS), training teachers capable of working in diverse educational contexts characterised by varied linguistic needs. In particular, the programme prepares professionals able to design, implement and assess educational interventions for:
- teaching Italian as a second language (L2) to non-Italian-speaking adults residing in Italy
- teaching Italian as a second language (L2) in schools to pupils and students from families that are not, or are only partially, Italian-speaking
- teaching Italian as a second/foreign language (L2/LS) for general or specific purposes (academic or professional), both in Italy and abroad
The qualification enables graduates to work with and collaborate with educational institutions, organisations, associations, and public and private agencies active in the fields of reception, language training, and the promotion of Italian language and culture worldwide.
In addition, the Master's qualification is considered for the allocation of points in ranking lists for teaching and educational staff in Italian schools and institutes of all types and levels.
University Educational Credits (CFU), equivalent to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), are recognised and transferable within Higher Education both in Italy and abroad.
To enrol in the Master's programme, candidates must hold a second-cycle degree, a single-cycle degree, a specialist degree or a degree awarded under the old system in one of the specific fields indicated in the Call for Applications, or alternatively, a second-cycle degree in any discipline together with a first-level University Master’s qualification in Teaching Italian as a Foreign Language, or a diploma from a Specialisation School in Teaching Italian as a Foreign Language, or equivalent qualifications obtained abroad.

Recognition of the Master’s degree for the purposes of class A023
By Ministerial Decree no. 130 of 6 July 2023 "Amendments to the Decree of the Minister of Education, University and Research of 23 February 2016, no. 92", the Italian Ministry of Education and Merit included the Second-level Master's in L2 Teaching in the list of qualifications valid for access to teaching in competition class A023.
The master’s programme lasts a total of 1,500 hours (60 ECTS credits) and is structured as an integrated learning pathway combining online teaching, laboratory activities, an in-person internship, and a final assessment. The programme includes:
11 online teaching modules
The modules are delivered remotely via the EduNext platform and combine asynchronous activities (video lectures and study materials) with live interactive sessions with academic staff. The content covers the main theoretical and methodological areas in the teaching of Italian as an L2/LS: language acquisition, linguistic typology, intercultural pragmatics, Council of Europe tools for language teaching, curriculum design, technologies for language learning, assessment of language competences, and teaching of contemporary Italian language structures.
3 interactive laboratories linked to the chosen specialisation pathway
The laboratories constitute the practical component of the programme and focus on developing educational activities and materials tailored to specific teaching contexts. Participants, supported by expert tutors, will design teaching units, activities, and resources for different learner profiles (adult migrants, international students in Italian schools, learners of Italian for general or specific purposes) through collaborative work and online e-tivities.
On-site Internship (225 hours – 9 ECTS)
The internship takes place at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia or other institutions and represents a key stage for integrating theoretical training with teaching practice. The activities include:
- classroom observation
- syllabus design and preparation of teaching materials
- teaching practice (with video recordings)
- peer-to-peer and tutor discussions
- critical analysis of teaching practices
It is possible to request the recognition of academic credits and a resulting partial or total exemption from the internship based on prior teaching experience or previously completed training activities. The following equivalence criterion is used to allocate credits:
1 ECTS is equivalent to:
- 150 hours of teaching Italian as a second/foreign language (L2/FL) in public or private institutions
- 450 hours of teaching Italian language and literature in schools of all levels with multicultural classes
- 450 hours of teaching another foreign language (e.g. English, Chinese, etc.) in public or private institutions
- at least 6 months as an assistant in Italian departments or courses abroad
Some previous training activities may also be recognised proportionally to their duration. In particular:
- an internship completed as part of the first-level Master's in “Teaching Italian as a Non-native Language” at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia entitles students to recognition of 3 ECTS
- internships undertaken within similar Master's programmes at other universities may be recognised by the Selection Committee in proportion to the duration of the activities carried out
- internships completed during a master's degree programme may be recognised following the same criterion
The recognition of credits grants a progressive exemption from attendance at the internship:
- with at least 3 ECTS recognised, exemption from the first week of the internship is granted
- with at least 6 ECTS recognised, exemption from the first two weeks of the internship is granted
- with 9 ECTS recognised, full exemption from the internship is granted
The final assessment consists of the presentation of a multimedia project work or a podcast on a topic relevant to the chosen track, as well as the planning and delivery of a lesson on teaching Italian as a second/foreign language related to the same track.
