The PhD is the third cycle of education in the Italian academic system and provides the skills required to carry out advanced research activities at universities, public bodies, or private entities, also facilitating access to careers in public administration and the integration of highly innovative professional paths (D.M. 226/2021).
Doctoral training:
- aims to advance knowledge through both basic and applied research training
- promotes opportunities for interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary education
- contributes to strengthening transnational and international research collaborations
- includes the acquisition of transferable skills to facilitate their application and development in both scientific and professional contexts
Master’s degree or equivalent qualification obtained abroad, recognized as suitable.

Admission to PhD programmes is based on passing a competitive selection process.
There are no restrictions regarding age or nationality for admission to PhD programmes. Applicants must hold a master’s degree (laurea magistrale/specialistica), a degree awarded under the pre-D.M. 509/1999 system, or an equivalent foreign qualification.
The annual call for applications is issued by Rector’s decree and published on this website, on the European EURAXESS portal, and on the Ministry’s website.
The selection process is based on the evaluation of qualifications and examinations. The examinations consist of a written test and an interview. Candidates must also demonstrate proficiency in one or more foreign languages. Each PhD programme offers a set number of positions, some with scholarships and some without.
The academic program concludes with the completion of a doctoral dissertation carried out using scientific methods. Upon passing the final examination, which consists of the dissertation defense, candidates are awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ("Dott. Ric." or "Ph.D."). The University issues, upon request, the standard Diploma Supplement for all doctoral programmes.

PhD in Linguistic, Philological and Literary-Artistic Studies
The doctoral program offers training in the areas of historical, theoretical, descriptive, and applied linguistics, language teaching, and Italian linguistics, including the use of digital technologies. Other key areas include the study of the Italian linguistic, textual, and literary tradition from its origins to the present day, as well as philological research, encompassing analyses of paraliterary, documentary, and editorial forms. These studies are part of the broader project to enhance the value of the Italian language heritage worldwide, alongside research into its artistic and audiovisual expressions from the Middle Ages to the present.

PhD in "Frontier Sciences in Sustainability, Diplomacy and International Cooperation"
The doctoral programme offers a transdisciplinary training and research pathway focused on topics that are strategic for contemporary society. Areas of study cover research trajectories spanning the three dimensions of sustainability (economic, social, environmental), aligned with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, with particular attention to diplomacy and international cooperation, as well as conditions of vulnerability.
