The Rector

By Ministerial Decree of 23 April 2021, no. 560, Prof. Valerio De Cesaris, Full Professor, was appointed Rector of the University for Foreigners of Perugia for the 2021-2027 six-year term.

Valerio De Cesaris (Rome 1974) is a full professor of contemporary history. His main research interests are in political and religious history, with a particular focus on twentieth-century Italy, the relationship between Catholics and Jews, antisemitism and racism, and migration phenomena.

His most recent books are: Vatican, Fascism and the Racial Question (Milan 2010), Spiritually Semitic. The Catholic Response to Antisemitism (Milan 2017), The Great Landing. Italy and the Discovery of Immigration (Milan 2018), Fascist Seduction. The Catholic Church and Mussolini 1919-1923 (Cinisello Balsamo 2020), The Battle for Consciences. The Catholic Church and Fascism 1924-1938 (Cinisello Balsamo 2022), In the Storm of War. The Catholic Church between Fascism and Democracy 1939-1945 (Cinisello Balsamo 2024).

He has recently edited the following volumes: The Mediterranean Boundary. Europe Facing Migrant Landings (with E. Diodato, Rome 2018), Immigration in Italy from Jerry Masslo to the Present Day (with M. Impagliazzo, Milan 2020), The University for Foreigners of Perugia. History of a University Open to the World (with S. Cingari, G. Rigano and R. Vetrugno, Rome 2024).

He is a full member of the Sturzo Institute in Rome and a member of the Italian Society for the Study of Contemporary History (SISSCO), where he served on the Executive Board from 2019 to 2022.

He has contributed to various newspapers and both national and international journals.
