The Other Half of the Gaze: The Photojournalists of the Protest Movement
The project aims to analyze the work of Italian female photojournalists who, in the 1970s, participated in the feminist movement by documenting it through photography. The research, thanks to a review of literature and fieldwork conducted through the combined study of primary and secondary sources, seeks to show not only the contribution of these photojournalists to the history of Italian photojournalism but also the role they played, through documenting the feminist experience, in the process by which women reclaimed their own image. In this way, the project aims to bring to light a body of work that has largely been overlooked and to highlight its possible ideological foundations, the specificity of the topics covered, and the difficulties faced by these photographers in being recognized as professionals in the society in which they worked.
