The PhD represents the third cycle of education in the Italian academic system and provides the skills necessary to conduct highly qualified research in universities, public or private institutions, also with a view to access careers in public administration and to enhance innovative professional pathways (Ministerial Decree 226/2021).
Doctoral training:
- advances knowledge through training in both basic and applied research
- promotes opportunities for interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary education
- contributes to strengthening transnational and international research collaborations
- includes the development of cross-cutting skills, facilitating their transfer and application in scientific and professional fields
A Master’s degree/specialist degree or another qualification obtained abroad, recognized as suitable.

Admission to PhD programmes is granted through a dedicated selection process.
Applicants holding a second-cycle/Master's degree, a degree awarded under the previous system prior to Ministerial Decree 509/1999, or a valid foreign qualification may apply to the PhD programme regardless of age or nationality.
The annual call for applications is issued by Rector's decree and published on this website, on the EURAXESS European portal, and on the Ministry's website.
Selection is based on qualifications and examinations. The examinations include a written test and an interview. Candidates must also demonstrate proficiency in one or more foreign languages. Each PhD programme offers a set number of positions with scholarships and others without scholarships.
The programme culminates in the preparation of a doctoral thesis conducted using scientific methods. Upon passing the final examination, which consists of the thesis defense, the title of Doctor of Philosophy ("Dott. Ric." or "Ph.D.") is awarded. The University issues, upon request, the standard Diploma Supplement for all doctoral programmes.

PhD in Linguistic, Philological and Literary-Artistic Studies
The PhD program offers training in the areas of historical, theoretical, descriptive, and applied linguistics, language teaching, and Italian linguistics, also in relation to the use of digital technologies. Other key fields include the study of the Italian linguistic, textual, and literary tradition from its origins to the present day, and philological approaches, which involve research into para-literary, documentary, and editorial forms as well. These pathways are part of a broader project to promote the global heritage of the Italian language, combined with the study of its artistic and audiovisual expressions from the Middle Ages to the present.

PhD Programme in "Frontier Sciences in Sustainability, Diplomacy and International Cooperation"
The doctoral program offers a transdisciplinary educational and research pathway on issues that are strategic for today's society. The research areas encompass topics across the three dimensions of sustainability (economic, social, and environmental), in line with the goals of the 2030 Agenda, with particular focus on diplomacy, international cooperation, and the condition of vulnerability.
