Centre for Literary Tourism - TULE

The Center for Literary Tourism is the first university research center in Europe established with the specific aim of focusing on literary tourism.

Connected to the course “Literature, Tourism and Regional Promotion,” which is part of the study plan for the Bachelor’s degree program “Made in Italy, Food and Hospitality” (MICO) at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia, the center was founded in December 2021.

It is led by an international scientific committee composed of lecturers and scholars from universities in Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Russia.

As outlined in its regulations, the center aims to promote research and scientific initiatives and reflection on literary tourism, serve as a network hub for experiences in Europe and worldwide that have emerged or are emerging around the theme of regional promotion through literature, and foster connections between the academic world and institutional and economic stakeholders operating in the tourism sector.

The University for Foreigners of Perugia has inaugurated the first European research center on literary tourism, known as TULE, with the aim of studying how travelers discover places through the lens of literature. This new center seeks to fill a gap at the continental level and to connect the academic field with the professional tourism sector and local communities. Italy is a leader in this area, with as many as 33 Literary Parks, and Umbria is developing a major trekking project following in Dante's footsteps between Gubbio and Foligno, a 130 km route. Literary tourism is growing rapidly, reflecting a broader interest in cultural tourism, emotional experiences, and sustainability, and the Perugia center aims to add cultural depth to this type of travel.
