"From Knowledge ...to Practical Skills"
The new Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), based on the provisions of Law no. 145 of December 30, 2018, have renamed and revised the “Alternanza scuola lavoro” programmes (Legislative Decree no. 77 of April 15, 2005) as “Pathways for Transversal Skills and Career Guidance” (PCTO).
Through practical experience, PCTO programmes enable upper secondary school students to consolidate and deepen the knowledge acquired at school by testing their personal aptitudes in real-world settings, further supporting their individual development and helping them choose their future academic path.
According to current regulations, PCTO (Paths for Transversal Skills and Orientation) remain a mandatory experience with the following minimum duration:
- 210 hours during the final three years of professional institutes
- 150 hours during the second two-year period and the final year of technical institutes
- 90 hours during the second two-year period and the fifth year of secondary schools (licei)
The University for Foreigners of Perugia continues to participate in the implementation of these orientation pathways, offering activities—planned and established in individual training programs—within its administrative offices and laboratories. These activities are coordinated and supervised by the Orientation Service.

To undertake an internship within the University for Foreigners of Perugia, you must follow procedures established by current legislation and, in compliance with safety regulations, specific agreements and training projects must be drawn up.
In order to correctly begin these internships, it is necessary to organize thematic orientation seminars and training meetings with staff from the Orientation Service, either within the Institutes or at the University, in preparation for possible internship periods.
Applications submitted by individual Institutes are evaluated by the Orientation Service based on the availability of University offices and the training projects proposed by them. For each office, a specific training project is prepared, to be signed by both the Institute tutor and the University tutor (head of the relevant University office). Priority for the placement of students in internships is given to Schools and Institutes with which collaboration and orientation activities have already been successfully established.
