What is a University Master’s Programme
In the Italian university system, a master’s is a postgraduate qualification aimed at advanced scientific training and continuing or recurrent education, undertaken after completing a first-cycle (bachelor’s) or second-cycle (master’s/specialist) degree.
The university master’s programme differs from other postgraduate courses in its minimum duration of one academic year (1,500 hours) and the awarding of 60 university credits (ECTS).
Obtaining a university master’s enables students to transfer credits earned—partially or fully—towards other degree programmes, specialisation courses, or further master’s programmes.
University master’s programmes are available at first and second level. Enrolment in a first-level master’s requires a bachelor’s degree, while a second-level master’s requires a master’s (or specialist) degree.
Holders of four-year degrees under the pre-reform system may access both first and second level master’s programmes.
First-level master’s programmes are multidisciplinary, whereas second-level master’s programmes are focused on advanced specialisation.
