What is a university master's degree

The master's degree is, in the Italian university system, a post-graduate qualification for advanced scientific and high-level – continuous and recurrent – training, obtained after earning a bachelor’s or specialist degree.

The university master’s degree differs from other post-graduate courses in its duration of at least one academic year (1500 hours) and the award of 60 university credits (CFU).

Obtaining a university master's degree allows students to use the acquired credits – in whole or in part – in other educational programs such as degree courses, specialization courses, or other master’s programs.

University master's degrees may be first level or second level. To access first level master’s degrees, one must have a bachelor’s degree; to access second level master’s degrees, a master’s (or specialist) degree is required.

With the old four-year degrees, it is possible to access master’s degrees of both levels.

First level master's degrees are multidisciplinary, while second level master's degrees are aimed at maximum specialization.
