Intercultural mediation is a tool for promoting the integration of foreign citizens in the area and for valuing diversity. It was recognized in Legislative Decree no. 286/1998, particularly in articles 38 and 42, and today the professional role of the intercultural mediator is required in various fields such as, by way of example: education and training; cultural inclusion; civic participation; healthcare; justice and penal execution; access to social services and public administration; administrative procedures concerning immigration, citizenship, and asylum; use of universal public services.
To be admitted to the course, it is necessary to:
- hold a secondary school diploma, or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad. If the qualification was obtained abroad (and was not issued in English, French, or Spanish), it is necessary to have an Italian translation of the qualification issued by an official translator or equivalent documentation. Foreign candidates with “international protection status,” pursuant to Article 25 of the UN Convention on Refugees, are exempt from presenting documentation attesting their qualification, which may be replaced by other probative documentation to be submitted to the Evaluation Committee referred to in Article 8, which will assess it also in light of the admission interview. They must, however, provide documentation proving their international protection status.
- have a good knowledge of the Italian language at least at level B1, for foreign candidates only
- hold a residence permit, for citizens of non-European Union countries only (permit of stay)
As a last resort, if the number of admitted candidates is lower than the number of available places, foreign candidates who do not possess the aforementioned qualification may also be admitted to the course, provided that the admission interview demonstrates their linguistic and cultural suitability. This category of participants may attend lessons and internships without taking exams or earning ECTS credits.

The selection will be conducted by the Community of S. Egidio ACAP, at the premises in Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, 23, Rome on the following two days: Sunday, September 28 and Thursday, October 2, 2025.

The course consists of:
- 320 hours of classroom teaching, divided into 13 educational modules covering applied social sciences, legal-economic subjects, and historical-political subjects.
The lessons will take place in person at the headquarters of the Community of Sant’Egidio (Via San Gallicano, n. 25/A –Rome). - 180 hours of internship.

What does the internship involve?
The internship takes place at the operational offices of the Community of S. Egidio and may consist of carrying out the following types of activities:
- Reception and mediation at soup kitchens and listening centers; medical hub
- Outreach activities with homeless people
- Guidance and support in handling administrative procedures related to immigration, residence, social security, as well as healthcare procedures
- Cultural mediation activities in family and school relationships and in neighborhood relations, with particular attention to families with a migrant background and elderly people
Is attendance compulsory?
Attendance is compulsory for 70% of the classroom activities and 70% of the internship activities.
Are assessments foreseen?
At the end of the course, a written assessment will be held on the topics covered in the 13 educational modules.
At the end of the internship, a report on the activities carried out is to be presented, which will be the subject of a final interview.
The educational activities will take place from November 16, 2025 to November 30, 2026.
Classes will be held on Sunday mornings and Thursday afternoons at the following times:
- Sunday, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
- Thursday, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm
At the end of the course, the University for Foreigners of Perugia will issue the following certificates to participants:
- certificate of course completion with the award of 40 University Educational Credits (CFU) for students who have met the attendance requirements and passed the assessments
- certificate of attendance without the award of CFU for students admitted to participate without the entrance qualification
