Summer School on Data Science, Learning and Optimization

Norcia (Italy), 23rd - 27th June 2025

General information

The Summer School DataSLO will explore key topics related to the core methodologies that drive Data Science, Machine Learning and Computational Optimization – the three foundational pillars of modern Artificial Intelligence.

The program will include lectures led by internationally recognized researchers, providing a balanced mix of theoretical insights and practical applications.

A roundtable discussion open to the audience will also take place on the final day.

Beyond the technical program, the Summer School will be an opportunity for: networking with the lecturers and other students, improving general research work skills, and enjoying a nice stay in Norcia!

  • Date: from June 23rd (Monday) until June 27th (Friday) 2025
  • Lesson timetable: 9:00 – 12.00 - 15:00-18.00
  • Duration: 35 hours
  • Participants: 25 maximum
  • Cost: free registration

Beneficiaries

The course is aimed at a maximum of 25 graduates interested in the topics of Data Science, Machine Learning and Computational Optimization. Of these, 15 are selected by partner universities (as specified in the call for admission), while other candidates can apply by following the instructions on this page.

Candidates must also demonstrate scientific interest in the topics covered in the course through a motivational letter to be attached at the application.

Admission Requirements

Necessary requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Knowledge of the English language at least B1 level according to the official CEFR guidelines

Additional Educational Qualifications (not necessary), in order of importance:

  • PhD
  • Enrollment to PhD Course
  • Master's Degree

The following priority criteria, in order of importance, will be consider for the admission:

  • residence in the area of central Italy earthquake crater of the 2016, as identified in the Ordinance of the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Government no. 101 of 30 April 2020 and indicated in the art. 7 of the Call for application
  • chronological order of the applications

  • Team Work on Data Science Topics (2 hs)
  • Heuristics for Continuous Optimisation – Design, Replicability & Behaviour (5 hs)
  • Team Work on Continuous Optimization Topics (2 hs)
  • Metaheuristics alongside Neural Models for Combinatorial Optimization (5 hs)
  • Team Work on Combinatorial Optimization Topics (2 hs)
  • AnyToVec – Learning Vector Representations (5 hs)
  • Team Work on Machine Learning Topics (2 hs)
  • Case studies and project discussion (1 hs)
  • Causal Discovery from Time Series (5 hs)
  • Round table discussion on key trends and the interplay of Data Science, Learning and Optimization (1 h)

Additional information

Participants will benefit free of:

  • meals (lunches and dinners) during the Course (from June 23rd until June 27th 2025)
  • accommodation during the Course (from 22nd June until 27th June 2025)
  • travel and transfers
  • guided excursion

Participants are expected to arrive in Perugia on Sunday 22 June.

A transfer bus will take them Perugia to Norcia, with the return trip scheduled for Saturday 28 June.

Details of the bus departure time and meeting point will be announced soon.

Venue

The DataSLO Summer School will be held in the beautiful historic town of Norcia (Umbria region, central Italy), known for its stunning landscapes and rich heritage. An excursion will be held on Saturday.
