Sustainability in research: innovative solutions for complex challenges

Sustainability also guides and permeates many of our flagship research projects, which range from the energy transition to the digital transition, from the protection of fundamental rights to inclusion and the promotion of diversity, from intergenerational justice to urban and social regeneration. These are scientific initiatives conceived and carried out through a series of institutional and academic collaborations at both international and local levels.

An emblematic example is the Phoenix Project, focused on the regeneration of the Valnerina area, affected by earthquakes, through learning paths and intensive training initiatives. We are particularly passionate about this project because it represents the goal of truly experiencing academia and research as a SERVICE for the community, for society, for local communities—especially those most vulnerable.

Students working together

Within the framework of the Fenice Project, in particular, there is a rather unique experiment in Italy: a PhD program in Liberal Arts and Sciences, which combines the study of so-called liberal arts, humanities, and social sciences with scientific and technological disciplines, all under the banner of sustainability. The aim is to recover a holistic dimension of knowledge, to move beyond the compartmentalization of knowledge, and to foster integration between the humanities and sciences, in order to promote an interdisciplinary dialogue that is increasingly essential for understanding an ever more complex and multifaceted reality.
