Prerequisiti
No previous skills are required, except for a suitable knowledge of Contemporary History. Students lacking this knowledge may use courses’ textbook (the instructors are available for any suggestion regarding the choice of the textbooks).
Language Requirement: A grasp of the English language (B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students may avail themselves, where appropriate, of the Language Tutoring Service.
Obiettivi formativi - Risultati di apprendimento attesi
This course aims at introducing students to migration studies through an historical perspective. The course also aims to provide participants with an in-depth knowledge of the main events and processes in contemporary history of migrations.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:

critically analyse and discuss migrations in their historical evolution. In particular, participants will enhance their knowledge of the role of migration policies, both in the national and international sphere

investigate specific migration cases, using different kinds of evidence from a variety of sources
Contenuto del corso
The course will be divided into four main topics:

Forced migrations, Asylum, refugees
-
Governance and Humanitarian Corridors
-
Mediterranean and European migrations
-
The “development nexus” and the histories of migration
The first part of the course will be focused on how the figure of refugee developed and how migrations changed during the xixth century. The second part will explore the role of governance and how the idea of governing migrations changed human movements, while the third will study mediterranean migrations and the evolution of a European policy. The last part is dedicated to the link between development and migrations, which will be analysed through the italian case study
Metodi didattici
Full-Time Students Lectures and exercitations carried out by students. Class attendance and active participation is recommended. Students are expected to carry out group work.
Non-Attending Students: Non-attending Students are required to to study the text listed below. Non-attending students will also be able to use the materials and indications uploaded on the LOL platform for their learning.
Digital platforms such as LOL and Teams will be used; both platforms may be eventually used for remote teaching, should this be provided by the Degree course Council.
Compensatory or dispensation measures will be provided to students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), as certified by the document filed with the Segreteria Didattica. For adapting the programme, students should set up a time to discuss with the lecturer. Metodi di accertamento
Active participation is subject to assessment during the course. Attending students are required to work in groups and to attend a final written exam.
For non-attending students, the assessment of the preparation will be based on an oral exam.
When it comes to students with certified Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), the assessment methods will be agreed in relation to specific needs, after hearing the Commissione per le differenze e l'inclusione.

Full-Time Students For students regularly attending the lectures (at least 75%) materials will be provided for each topic on the digital platform LOL.
Non-Attending Students Students not attending classes are required to study this textbook:

Class attendance is required for Full-Time Students, who are invited to join the class in the first week of the Course. Active participation in class discussions is recommended. Students who attend at least 2/3 of the lessons qualify as "attending".
