Prerequisiti
Knowledge of English at the B2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for languages).
Obiettivi formativi - Risultati di apprendimento attesi
The course aims at training students in the practice of writing Academic English, by studying, summarising and reproducing texts written in this genre.
Contenuto del corso
The course will focus on the analysis of written academic texts, and it will concentrate on the linguistic structures that are most frequently employed in this genre. More specifically, it will cover basic notions in syntactic and morphological description of the language. The topics covered include:
- analysing and segmenting a text in smaller units;
- identification of relevant information and keywords;
- listening to specific texts and note-taking;
- listening to conferences, note-taking and summarising;
- structuring of academic texts;
- paraphrasing and rewriting;
- paragraph structure and sequences of information.
Metodi didattici
The workshop consists of both lectures and seminars. The nature of the workshop is very practical, and students are required to contribute in class with their own pieces of writing.
Metodi di accertamento
The final exam will be written. Students will be asked to produce a short abstract (max 250-300 words) for a scientific article.
