day 1
INVITING FRIENDS OVER THE PHONE
The day is dedicated to exploring how speakers of English, French, Finnish and Italian invite friends in their everyday life.
We will use Conversation Analysis to explore comparable corpora of naturally occurring talk among family members and their acquaintances to identify how participants design the lexical, syntactical and prosodic features of talk to their purposes and to the most relevant circumstances of the interaction.
Although Conversational Analysis is an intrinsically comparative approach, its empirical nature poses challenges in comparing actions across languages.
We have chosen to focus on invitations because inviting is such a key social action in our sociability with one another and maintaining our relationships.
