The PhD programme in Linguistic, Philological and Artistic-Literary Studies results from a thorough revision of the decades-old PhD programme of the University for Foreigners of Perugia.

The Doctorate Course, which is part of the Department of Language, Literature and the Arts in the World (LiLAIM), represents the ideal advancement of the research training of the previous Level I and II cycles. It is divided into two curricula and is representative of the main areas of research and teaching, namely linguistics and philology, art and literature.

The Course emphasizes the main areas of study, starting with those that focus on teaching, study - in diachronic and synchronic perspective - and the promotion of the Italian language in the world, as well as on the Italian of migration. These research lines aim to offer a specialized training programme in the areas of historical, theoretical, descriptive and applied linguistics (acquisitional and corpus linguistics), glottodidactics (theories, practices and educational policies) and Italian linguistics (Italian and its varieties, dialects and minority languages, sociolinguistics, interlingual contact, as well as the study of the processes of formation and evolution of Italian), also in relation to the use of digital technologies.

Other important areas are the study of the Italian linguistic, textual and literary tradition from its origins to the present day (tradition of the classics, criticism and theory of literature) and philology (Italian, Middle Latin and Romance tradition), which is expressed through investigations into forms, including paraliterary, documentary and editorial ones. These paths are part of the broader project of enhancing the heritage of Italian in the world, combined with the study of its artistic and audiovisual expressions from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The Course is consistent with some of the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda:
Goal 4. Quality Education
Goal 5. Gender Equality
Goal 8. Decent work and economic growth
Goal 10. Reduce inequalities
Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions
