Prerequisiti

No prior knowledge or specific skills are required to attend the course. If necessary, particularly following indications emerging from the admission interviews, students may benefit from the peer language tutoring service provided by the University.

The course aims to provide advanced and interdisciplinary knowledge on renewable energy sources, focusing on their operating principles, technologies, application fields, and strategic role in the ecological transition and in the decarbonisation of energy systems. Special attention will be devoted to the energy, environmental, economic, and geopolitical dynamics characterising the national, European, and international contexts, with reference to climate goals and sustainability policies.

At the end of the course, students will be able to critically apply the acquired knowledge to interpret the main dynamics related to energy production, conversion, and use. They will also be able to assess opportunities, benefits, limitations, and challenges associated with the diffusion of renewable energy sources, considering technological, environmental, economic, social, and territorial aspects, as well as implications for energy security and sustainable transition.

Contenuto del corso

  • The international and national energy context;
  • Classification of conventional, renewable, and alternative energy sources;
  • Description of the main technologies for the exploitation of renewable energy sources;
  • Environmental benefits of renewable energy sources;
  • Incentives and costs of renewables;
  • Barriers to the diffusion of renewable energy sources;
  • The social role of renewable energy sources, with particular reference to developing countries.

Metodi didattici

Lectures will be supported by PowerPoint presentations and multimedia materials in order to facilitate the understanding of the course contents and promote a dynamic learning experience. The course will also include practical activities and participatory teaching sessions aimed at encouraging student engagement, critical discussion, and interaction between students and the lecturer. Throughout the course, all teaching materials used during lectures will be regularly made available to students, together with additional resources for further study, such as technical reports, scientific articles, institutional documents, and specialized websites. The LOL and Teams digital platforms will be used to support teaching activities and may also be employed for distance learning, in accordance with the guidelines established by the Degree Programmes.

Students who have submitted certifications regarding disabilities or specific learning disorders (DSA) to the Student Office are encouraged to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course, also through the University Disability and DSA Support Service (sdda@unistrapg.it), in order to arrange appropriate compensatory and/or dispensatory measures for adapting teaching activities.

Non-attending students will be able to access the teaching materials available on the University LOL platform and may arrange meetings, including online meetings, with the lecturer in order to receive support for individual study.

Metodi di accertamento

The assessment will consist of an oral examination aimed at verifying the knowledge acquired through the assigned bibliography and the topics covered during the course.

Students will also be required to present an in-depth project on topics agreed upon with the lecturer and consistent with the course contents. The project may be carried out individually or in groups of 2–3 students, with the aim of developing critical analysis, interdisciplinary investigation, and communication skills. For non-attending students, the in-depth project must be completed individually.

For students with certified disabilities or specific learning disorders (DSA), the examination arrangements will be agreed according to their specific needs, in consultation with the University Disability and DSA Support Service.

Testi di esame

Course materials will include lecture notes, scientific articles, technical reports, and policy briefs provided by the lecturer throughout the course. The final exam will be based on the materials made available on the University’s Learning Online platform (LOL), including the slides presented during lectures and additional resources selected to explore the topics covered in greater depth.

During the course, students will be encouraged to consult official reports and documents, as well as relevant scientific articles. All required and recommended materials will be made available on the University’s Learning Online (LOL) platform.

Attendance at lectures is strongly recommended, as it supports a deeper understanding of the topics covered, encourages direct interaction with the lecturer, and contributes to the achievement of the course learning outcomes.

Student consultation hours are generally held on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, by prior appointment. Appointments should be arranged with the lecturer via email at chiara.chiatti@unistrapg.it.
