Recognition of foreign academic titles

Students who have earned a degree outside of Italy may request that this degree be officially recognised, for purely academic purposes, by the University for Foreigners Perugia.

The request and backup documentation must be submitted well in advance of the annual Degree Course registration deadline.

Non-EU citizens who do not live in Italy must submit a recognition request, with all of the documentation needed, to the Italian Embassy or Consulate in the country in which the degree or study title was issued.

The Italian Embassy or Consulate, once it has verified the request and in the absence of contrary regulations, will then send it on to the University for Foreigners Perugia.

The academic authorities will deliberate on the recognition requests and can:

  • declare the degree equivalent to an Italian university degree, with all of the accompanying rights;
  • give partial recognition to each or any of the exams passed, resulting in the candidate having to enroll in a year-long intermediate course of Italian studies to complete the exams and, eventually, prepare and defend a thesis.

The official process to grant equivalence or recognition will conclude with the issuance of a decision by the academic authorities.

Documentation required

The following documentation must be submitted along with the request letter and a 14.62 euro tax stamp to the Rector of the University for Foreigners Perugia:

  3. The original certificate of the exams sat for and passed which led to the non-Italian academic title mentioned in point 2, with an Embassy-approved Italian translation.
  4. The study curriculum written on the university’s headed paper and stamped by it, including all of the disciplines included in the curriculum all with an Embassy-approved Italian translation.
  5. A list of other post-graduate academic achievements, translated and approved as above, including the Declaration of Value.
  6. A copy of a valid identification document (passport or ID card)
  7. Two passport-size colour ID photos, one of which must be authenticated if the candidate is a non-EU citizen not living in Italy.
